ANZAC Ship Maintenance Training System (AMTS)
SMA has produced the ANZAC Ship Maintenance Training System (AMTS)
for the ANZAC Ship Alliance as a replacement for operational level
maintenance training that was originally delivered using actual
ship-fit Equipment. The AMTS provides the capability to: - a) Provide
Trainees with an understanding of Equipment operation, functional
composition, and the basic signal flows between subassemblies;
- b)
Provide training in an environment free from the dangers of the
Equipment, such as high voltages or Radio Frequency (RF) energy;
and
- c) Provide training for maintenance technicians in system operation,
fault finding and maintenance procedures.
The AMTS consists of three
identical and independent Classrooms, with one Instructor and up
to six Trainees in each Classroom, and supports the following Equipment: -
a) Ericsson Sea Giraffe Target Indication Radar (TIR);
- b) Raytheon
AN/SPS-49 2D Radar (2DR);
- c) Cossor Identification Friend or Foe
(IFF); and
- d) Thales Spherion B Hull Mounted Sonar (HMS), including
Underwater Telephone (UWT).

The AMTS provides the Instructor with the ability to present traditional
theory teaching, using a Learning Management System. Both Instructor
and Trainees also have access to Personal Computer based Maintenance
Simulators of ship-fit Equipment. The AMTS also includes two Part
Task Trainers (PTTs) for the development of specialist physical
skills, where the PTTs provide a physical representation of part
of the real Equipment.
